Natural ways that will make your house smell like heaven

There’s nothing worse than coming home after work or inviting friends and family round to a house that smells. Whether it’s dirty washing, rotten food or that distinct ‘wet dog’ smell (we love our dogs, but that stench is something else) sometimes synthetic odor deterrents don’t actually work. So why not go au natural? Check out these five natural ways that will make your house smell amazing.

Freshly cut flowers

Freshly cut flowers will make your house smell beautiful. Guaranteed. Whether you’re given them as a present or buy them for yourself (there’s no shame in that) sticking these flowers in your living room or kitchen will automatically make it smell fragrant – in a good way! Research suggests that the best flowers to keep the stench away are: Jasmine, Lily of the Valley, Hyacinth, Daffodils, and Peonies. You may even have some of them in your garden.

Fresh fruit

When you walk past your fruit bowl, you get a wonderful waft of fresh fruit – and keeping more of it around the house will help rid your house of those nasty smells. But you can also get creative with your fruit. One way to combat nasty odors is to take an orange (or several, it’s up to you) and stick whole cloves into the flesh, leaving the clove sticking out. You can even do this in a pretty pattern. Stick this around your house and smell for yourself.

Make your own stove simmer

One way to get your house smelling warm and fresh is to make your own stove simmer. Simply simmer a bit of water in a saucepan and add anything you like to it – you could choose to use herbs, citrus fruits, lavender or even essential oils. The heat and the water will bring out the amazing smells of the herbs and fruit, which will permeate throughout your whole house.

Do some baking

Seriously, do we need any more reason to bake some cakes, or bake some delicious cookies? Well, we’re giving you one more anyway. The smell your baking makes is often more enticing than the actual end product (but not quite) and usually lingers for hours after the oven has been turned off. If you add stronger smelling ingredients to your mixture, such as cinnamon, this will make your house smell even more delicious.

Grab some decorative pine cones

When thinking about luscious smells, Pine Cones don’t exactly come to mind as the most luscious of them all – in fact, do they really smell? Not really, but you can make them smell, and set them down as a funky decorative piece at the same time. All you have to do is find some Pine Cones (hopefully that should be pretty easy!) and add drops of your favorite essential oil smell onto them. This could be cinnamon, or lavender, or any other smell you just can’t seem to get enough of. If you place them in a basket or a holder of your choice, they will add a beautiful smell to your rooms.
